Cantonese food

Some of the students took me around Guangzhou to eat traditional Cantonese food with them.

Our first stop was a traditional Cantonese restaurant where we had what my students described as a smelly soup. I found out that it was like a soup made from cow lungs or hearts, it was very salty to eat but not as bad as I expected!

We then went for morning tea or breakfast tea. This was delicious! We had lots of types of dumplings, rice porridge, herb jelly, shrimp pancake type things and I even tried chicken feet which was really scary. Chicken feet are not eaten in England, it is something that I give to my pet dog as a treat! It actually tasted nice with a lot of flavour and I was relieved that you are not meant to eat the bones. I found that the herb jelly had a strange flavour but I liked the sweetness. It was really nice sitting around the table talking and everyone helping themselves to the dishes from the middle of the table. This is different to England where the parents would serve out the food onto everyone’s plate or people would have their own dish.

I enjoyed drinking the Pu er tea and the students explained the reason behind tapping your fingers on the table to thank the person that pours your tea. I thought the story about the emperor disguising himself to experience the life of his subjects was very interesting.

After that we walked to a spicy food restaurant and had a huge bowl of spicy soup with meat, bean sprouts and pigs blood in. It was very hot and spicy but so tasty. We also had a dish which the students explained, when translated into English, was called 'the skin of a countryside person'. I thought this sounded very strange but it was actually very nice and a lot like noodles. The students said that traditional Guangzhou food was not spicy like this food.

Our last stop was for deserts. I did not know what any of them were but they all looked so tasty. There were lots of Mango puddings which were nice and fruity. Eating all of the food made us very happy and relaxed. I like the food in Guangzhou because it tastes delicious and it is good for sharing.
