The history of Western Contemporary music

As part of my responsibilities to the school I teach a class called ‘The history of Western Contemporary music’. It is an optional class for senior one students and was taken quite enthusiastically by many of them. However it came as quite a shock to them that Western music is more than just Justin Beiber!

I think many of my students took the class under the allusion that we would be sitting around listening to the Backstreet Boys for 40 minutes. They definitely were not expecting an in depth history of Western music. Therefore you can imagine their surprise when they turned up and I was forcing them to listen to jazz.

During the first class I made sure to ask the students who their favourite artist was. The majority liked mainstream pop artists, such as One Direction, Westlife, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. So exposing them to music that laid the foundations of modern pop (Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis and Woody Guthrie) has been very interesting to watch. Although the majority of the new music has been received as ‘so-so’ they do seem to have liked some new things. Surprisingly the folk-punk of the Pogues was nearly universally enjoyed. Therefore I’m close to my aim of getting my students to listen and appreciate everything, from the loudest heavy metal to the most intelligent hip hop, and hopefully wean them away from their love of mainstream pop music!
